UPDATE: Stabbing suspect arrested and charged, victim remains hospitalized

Arrested:  Ruben D. Diaz, 36, Boise

Charged:  Attempted Murder (F), Aggravated Assault (F)- 2 Counts

The man suspected of attacking another man with a knife in an East Boise neighborhood Thursday morning has been cleared from the hospital and transported to jail. The suspect, identified as  Ruben D. Diaz, is facing a charge of felony attempted murder upon investigation and after he made statements to police indicating he wanted to harm or kill someone.   Diaz resides in the surrounding area and did not know the victim.  The investigation is ongoing.

What happened: The victim, a 74-year-old man, was doing yardwork in front of his home on Preamble Place when the suspect approached him and suddenly began attacking him with a knife, according to witness reports.  Neighbors called 911 and as officers arrived on scene four minutes after the initial 911 call, they found Diaz assaulting the victim.  Officers immediately challenged the suspect and he backed away from the victim, but would not comply with officers commands to drop the knife and brandished it at officers.  Officers deployed tasers to subdue the suspect and take him into custody.  Officers provided medical aid to the victim and cleared the victim’s house to make sure there was no one else hurt or injured inside.  Ada County Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital where he remains with serious injuries.

Boise Police responded to a stabbing at a residence on the 3900 block of Preamble Place at just before 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.  Reports to dispatch indicated a male adult was attacking a male victim with a knife outside the residence.  When officers arrived on scene, they located the suspect still holding a knife.  He did not comply with officer commands to drop the knife and two officers deployed their tasers to subdue the suspect.  The knife was secured and officers took the suspect into custody without further incident.  The victim was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries that at this time do not appear to be life threatening.  The suspect was also transported to the hospital to be assessed.

It is unknown at this time what the suspect was doing in the neighborhood and it doesn’t appear that the victim knew the suspect.  Members of the Boise Police Violent Crimes Unit have responded to the scene and the investigation remains ongoing.
