Boise Police Salute the Service of a K9 Partner - Remembering Dasty

Members of the Boise Police Department want to thank all those sending their condolences after the recent and unexpected loss of one of the department’s K9 partners – Dasty 1. Dasty 1 - 1

Dasty passed away Saturday, March 8 at a local veterinary hospital after complications following emergency surgery due to a sudden illness. The full extent and nature of the illness has yet to be determined. His handler was by his side.

“Dasty was hard working and a very good natured dog to be around. He loved his job and he loved his handler," said Lt. Doug Schoenborn of the Boise Police Airport Unit.

"While Dasty played an important role in airport security and public safety, he was also a friend to the officers who worked with him full-time, side by side for thousands of hours as partners. We salute his service and definitely mourn his loss.”

About Dasty 1Known as “Dasty 1”, the 7 year old, sable –coated male German Shepherd joined the Boise Police Airport Unit in April, 2009. He was owned by the TSA as a member of the Airport’s Explosive Detection K9 Team. From the beginning of Dasty’s service, including his initial training as an explosive detection dog, he has been assigned to the same handler, a Boise Police Officer assigned to the Airport Unit.

Dasty was well loved by his airport colleagues and all who came to know him. In his five-year career with Boise PD and the TSA, Dasty met thousands of people. He enjoyed meeting children and demonstrated his amazing detection skills for a countless number of students in dozens of school visits. Dasty responded to hundreds of call outs and special assignments and was often part of the security team making sure venues and special events were safe for large crowds. Dasty helped secure events including concerts, fun runs and football games to dignitary visits.

But Dasty’s heart was working at the Boise Airport, interacting with employees and travelers, sniffing and searching bags and planes, doing his part to make sure Boise air travelers stay safe. Dasty 1 will be missed.
