BPD Joins Drug Free Idaho for nationwide prescription drug take-back day

This fall, Boise City Police will join DrugFree Idaho, the Drug Enforcement Administration and other local law enforcement partners to give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

On Saturday, September 29th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., BPD and its partners will participate in the National PrescriptionDrugTakeBackGeneric.jpg Drug Take-Back Day. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Boise City residents are encouraged to take advantage of this valuable opportunity, go through their medicine cabinets and turn-in their unwanted prescription medications for safe disposal at Saint Luke's Children's Specialty Center, 190 E Bannock, Boise, 83712.

Last April, Idaho residents turned in over 4,245 pounds (2.1 Tons!) of prescription drugs at 30 locations across the state in this effort.  We hope to collect even more this fall by adding additional collection points in Garden City, Meridian, Boise, Eagle and Kuna.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines left in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high--more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined, according to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

This event gives us an unprecedented opportunity to educate everyone in our community about the growing prescription drug abuse problem – and to offer a solution.  Studies have shown that, for many, prescription drugs are the very first drugs they abuse—and all too often they aren’t the last.

Please help us make a difference on Saturday, September 29th.  Turn in your unused or expired medication for safe disposal from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Saint Luke's Children's Specialty Center, 190 E Bannock, Boise, 83712.  .
