UPDATE - Detectives learn a reported attack on the greenbelt did NOT occur

11-05-10 UPDATE - Detectives learn a reported attack on the greenbelt did NOT occur

UPDATE to report initially released Oct. 10, 2010:

Boise, Nov. 5, 2010 - Boise Police detectives have learned after many hours of investigation, that a sexual assault reported to have occurred early the morning of Sunday, Oct. 10th beneath the Capitol Bridge on the Boise greenbelt did in factNOToccur.

"We know that many people in our community were scared and understandably very concerned after the report. So were we." said Sgt. Kip Higby of the Boise Police Special Victims Unit. "Officers have spent dozens and dozens of hours investigating. But at this point, we can confidently say the stranger attack first reported did not occur."

Detectives are still working with the woman who initially came forward and reported the attack. The investigation into what may have happened involving the woman remains open. However, detectives say they have solid evidence the reported sexual assault by a stranger on the greenbelt did NOT occur.

"While this investigation is now going a much different direction, we always remind citizens to be aware of their safety. We want citizens to know how to keep themselves safe and steps we should all take to keep from becoming a victim of crime." said Sgt. Higby.

As previously reported, Boise Police ALWAYS remind citizens of these personal safety steps:

  • Be focused on and aware of your surroundings.
  • Walk in pairs or groups. Don't stray away from the crowd. There's safety in numbers.
  • Stay in well lit areas.
  • Avoid areas where thick brush provides hiding places.
  • Report any suspicious activity to police right away.
