02-05-10 Quick Arrest in Armed Robbery Mall Parking Lot
Boise, Feb 8, 2010 - Boise Police were
dispatched to a report of an armed robbery Friday night. The
emergency call came in at 9:43 p.m. Mall Security reported the
crime had just occurred on the south side of the Boise Towne Square
Mall parking lot near the JC Pennys.
The first Boise Police Officers arrived
on scene in the parking lot in less than one minute from the time
of the call. A citizen pointed out a suspect vehicle to officers
which was leaving the area.
Boise Police stopped the vehicle, a 1989
VW van. Officers immediately saw evidence in plain sight in the
suspect vehicle that they believed connected the driver to the
crime that had just occurred. The driver was arrested.
"This was a violent crime where a weapon
was displayed," said Lt. Alan Cavener, Watch Commander for the
Boise Police Bench Patrol Division. "The citizen witnesses did the
right thing, they called police right away and gave quick, accurate
information. I'm very pleased this arrest came about so quickly for
the sake of the victim and the security of citizens who shop in
this very busy, popular retail area." said Lt. Cavener.
What Happened: A woman was walking to
her car at approx 9:43 p.m. Friday night, February 5th. She tells
officers that a man came up to her carrying a handgun and tried to
rob her, demanding several personal items. As the woman yelled for
help from others nearby, the man ran. He was seen by witnesses
jumping over the wall from the upper parking lot by JC Pennys
to the lower lot. Witnesses in the lower lot, saw the man land in
the bushes and run to a van parked nearby. It was then a Boise
Police Officer arrived on scene and a witness pointed toward the
