10-29-09 Robbery Suspect Captured After Quick Pursuit

Boise, Oct. 29, 2009, 6:00 p.m. - Boise Police, Garden City Police, Ada County Sheriff's Deputies and officers with Meridian Police assisted in a pursuit late this afternoon that led to the arrest of a bank robbery suspect from Garden City.

The two-minute chase ended when officers executed the PIT maneuver - a pursuit intervention technique, and stopped the suspect vehicle on southbound Eagle Rd. just south of McMillan. The PIT means police officers use their vehicles in a controlled collision with the suspect car to bring it to a halt. Three police vehicles were damaged in the chase, one BPD, one GCPD, one ACSO. No other vehicles were involved. No one appears injured.

"The officers kept public safety top of mind throughout this pursuit," said Lt. Alan Cavener, Boise Police Watch Commander. "Bank robbery suspects are always considered desperate and potentially dangerous to the public. We appreciate the officers from all the agencies cooperating, using their training, and quickly bringing this to a safe conclusion."

What Happened: Boise Police responded to assist Garden City Police after a report of a bank robbery at State St. & Glenwood at 4:59 p.m. Witnesses were able to give officers a good description of the suspect. At 5:07 p.m., a possible suspect vehicle was spotted by Boise and Garden City officers, a white Olds Alero, at Chinden and Garret Streets.

As the officers went to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated. Because the driver was a possible suspect in an armed robbery, a crime considered violent that just occurred, the Boise Police Watch Commander advised officers to continue the pursuit.

Officers followed the suspect vehicle west on Chinden at speeds up to 80 mph. At Chinden approaching Eagle Rd, the suspect swerved and appeared to intentionally hit two pursuing patrol cars. Neither of the patrol vehicles were disabled, both continued the pursuit.

The suspect turned south on Eagle Rd. At 5:09 p.m., pursuing officers successfully executed the PIT maneuver on the suspect vehicle on Eagle just south of McMiillan. The suspect vehicle came to a stop and the suspect was immediately taken into custody.

At this time: Although Boise Police supervised the pursuit, the crime - the bank robbery - occurred in Garden City jurisdiction. The suspect is now in their custody. Any further information on the robbery or potential charges will be released by Garden City Police.
