06-15-08 Hostage Situation/Kidnapping

At about 9:10 pm, on June 15th, 2008 - officers responded to the 28th and Sunset area to conduct a welfare check on a female who stated she was kidnapped by her husband. She was able to escape and notify dispatch of the situation. The victim had been battered by her husband, who had also threatened her with a knife. The 33 year old husband and 5 month old baby were still in the residence when officers arrived. The husband was reported to have numerous firearms in the residence. Officers attempted to contact the suspect with no success. The Special Operations Unit, Hostage Negotiators, and Victim Witness personnel were called to assist with the situation. At one point during the incident officers heard what was believed to be a gunshot from inside the residence. Special Operations personnel made entry a short time later and found the baby safe and uninjured and the suspect deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation is still continuing into what precipitated the situation.

Inquires into the incident should be made through Lynn Hightower during normal business hours.
