Seven hour standoff ends with arrest

Boise, March 28, 2013, 11:50 p.m. - Boise Police officers took a man into custody on a felony domestic violence charge after a seven hour standoff a local motel.

Arrested: Dimas Robert Narvaiz, II, 26, Boise

Charged: Attempted Strangulation (F)

Additional Charges are likely.

What Happened: Boise Police were called to the motel on the 8000 block of W. Overland Rd at 3:20 p.m. for a violent domestic incident that was ongoing in a 1st floor motel room. When officers arrived, the female victim was safely out of the room. The male suspect, Narvaiz, was still inside the room. Officers received conflicting reports as to whether the suspect was armed. The suspect immediately began threatening harm to himself and also requested officers to use their weapons on him. Instead, officers tried to talk him peacefully out of the room. Soon, patrol officers called in the team of expert crisis negotiators to continue to try and talk the man out. Several SWAT officers were also called out as a precaution if indeed the suspect was armed.

While the negotiations were ongoing, as a precaution, several people were asked to leave the motel. Others who tried at get to the hotel while the incident was ongoing were forced to wait until the situation resolved.

At approximately 10:10 p.m., after nearly seven hours of trying to talk the suspect out, officers broke a window to the room, then deployed tear gas. The suspect surrendered at 10:31 p.m. He was taken by paramedics to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. When he is released, he will be booked into the Ada County Jail on the above charges. When the suspect was arrested he did not have a weapon in his possession. The investigation is ongoing.

The suspect had a dog in the room with him during the incident. When the suspect surrendered, the dog ran off. The dog was captured safely by Ada County Animal Control in a nearby parking lot a short time later. The dog was uninjured.

During the incident, a small portion of an adjacent retail store, the outside garden shop was closed to shoppers as a precaution. The motel is located behind two large retailers. There was no traffic disruption.
