Boise, Feb. 5, 2013 - Garden City Police Officers made an arrest this morning after Boise's major newspaper reported a number of their coin-operated vending boxes had been stolen since early January in both Boise City and Garden City. Boise and Garden City Police worked together on the case that resulted in two suspects being caught in the act of stealing yet another newspaper vending box.
Arrested: Henry W. Guntrum, Jr., 40, Garden City
Arrested: Chad E. Atwood, 30, Garden City
Charged: Grand Theft (F)
Officers from Garden City contacted the two susects as they were unloading a stolen newspaper vending box from a pick-up truck about 4:00 a.m. this morning in Garden City. Officers found the box had just been taken from a location in Boise.
Since early January, approximately 15 of the newspaper vending boxes had been reported stolen from Boise City. At this time, the charges reflect the ongoing investigation from Garden City. Boise Police Property Crimes detectives are working with Ada County Prosecutors. Additional charges against the two suspects are possible.

Serving Since 1954GARDEN CITY – Over the past three weeks, the Idaho Statesman has been the victim of multiple thefts in which seventeen coin operated newspaper boxes were stolen, with losses exceeding $12,000.00. Both the Garden City Police and Boise City Police had numerous open criminal cases involving the thefts and collaborated throughout the investigation.
On January 29, 2013, Garden City Police detectives identified a potential suspect and focused their investigation on Henry W. Guntrum Jr., a 40-year-old Garden City resident. Since that time, detectives conducted numerous interviews and extensive surveillance.
On February 5, 2013, at approximately 4:00 AM, Garden City officers contacted and arrested Guntrum and a second suspect, Chad E. Atwood, a 30-year-old Garden City resident. Guntrum and Atwood were in the process of unloading a stolen Idaho Statesman newspaper box from a pick-up truck at the time officers contacted them. Guntrum and Atwood were taken into custody without incident and transported to the Garden City Police Department where they were interviewed by detectives.
Detectives applied for and received a search warrant for Guntrum’s residence which is located in the 200 block of E. 43rd. While at the residence, detectives recovered a total of four newspaper boxes and several additional items from a separate burglary that occurred in Boise. Police also recovered numerous items of drug paraphernalia.
As a result of the investigation, law enforcement located an additional seven newspaper boxes that were discarded off Highway 21, near Lucky Peak Dam.
Guntrum and Atwood were booked into the Ada County Jail on charges of Grand Theft, and will be arraigned on February 6, 2013, at 1:30PM at the Ada County Courthouse. Additional charges will be reviewed by the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office.
The Garden City Police advise that the investigation is ongoing in an attempt to recover all of the stolen property and identify anyone else involved. Anyone with information regarding thefts is encouraged to contact the Garden City Police Department at 472-2950, or Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.
