Late night standoff with burglary suspect ends in arrest

"We want to thank the citizen who called in the initial report of a disturbance to police. We also want to thank the citizens who endured a prolonged presence in the neighborhood this morning, for their patience." Says Boise Police Patrol Captain Eugene Smith. "This type of citizen call, something suspicious in the neighborhood, is the kind of cooperation between police and citizens that can make a difference in the effort to fight crime in our community."

Arrested: Robert K. Streicher, 35, Boise

Charges: Burglary (F), other charges may be pending

What happened: Boise police received a report of a disturbance at an apartment complex on the 5100 block of West Morris Hill early this morning, January 5th, at approximately 4:15 a.m. The neighbor who called tells police she heard a window shatter and noises outside. Officers who responded to the call found the window to one of the apartments had been broken and a man was seen fleeing the immediate area. Officers chased the suspect, who climbed up an awning, and onto the roof of an apartment. At the same time, other responding officers determined that items taken from the residence may include firearms. With this information, and the knowledge that the suspect was on the roof of the complex, a perimeter was established for the safety of the community. Multiple officers were involved in the standoff. With the assistance of Boise Fire and a ladder truck, the suspect was eventually taken into custody after spending several hours in the cold temperatures at approximately 8:15 a.m. this morning. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident and transported to a local hospital to be examined for any possible cold related injuries. Officers recovered personal items that had been taken from the apartment, but no firearms. After being cleared by medical personnel, the suspect will be booked in to the Ada County jail on the above listed charges.
