04-21-10 Fatal Collision - Maple Grove Overpass

UPDATE: The Ada County Coroner has identified the victim of today's crash as Elvin Thomas Spencer, 50, of Boise.

Boise, April 21, 2010 - Boise Police crash reconstruction experts and BPD detectives are trying to find out why the driver of a sedan reportedly swerved across 3 lanes of traffic hitting a pick up truck head on. Sadly, the driver of the pick up truck died on scene.

What Happened: Boise Police were called by motorists at 7:28 a.m. this morning to the south side of the I-84 overpass on Maple Grove.

When officers arrived they found two vehicles involved in the crash, a Cadillac Seville sedan and an older model flatbed pick up. The adult male drivers were the only occupants of each vehicle.

Witnesses tell officers the pick up was in the far right southbound lane. The Cadillac was headed north, also in the far lane, when suddenly the Cadillac served to the left, crossing two lanes, then hitting the pick up truck head on in the far lane.

The driver of the Cadillac was taken to the hospital with what appeared to officers on scene to be serious injuries. It's unclear if the Cadillac driver was wearing seat belts. An airbag in the sedan did deploy.

Investigators have not found any seat belts in the pick up. The older model truck had a bench seat that appears to have flown forward upon impact. Officers found the pick up truck driver severely injured when they arrived. EMS arrived on scene within moments, placed the pick up truck driver in an ambulance, but the man was pronounced dead on scene. Boise Police detectives are working with the Ada County Coroner to notify the victim's family. His identity will be released by the Coroner following family notification.

Traffic Impact: Currently southbound lanes of Maple Grove from Franklin to the south side of the overpass are closed while officers investigate and try to find answers as to exactly what happened and why.

Warrant Arrested: Maria Ortiz, 27, Boise

Warrant Charges: Injury to a Child (F)

The suspect was taken into custody on an outstanding felony warrant for Injury to a Child yesterday.

The arrest warrant stems from an ongoing investigation into an incident that took place on April 14th of this year. Evidence indicates the suspect placed a child, under the age of 2, in a situation likely to cause harm. That investigative information was forwarded to the Ada County Prosecuting Attorney's Office and resulted in the felony warrant.

----------

Warrant Arrested: John N. Sorenson, 36, Boise

Warrant Charges:Possession of Sexually Exploitive Materials (F)

The suspect was taken into custody on an outstanding felony warrant for Possession of Sexually Exploitive Materials yesterday.

The arrest warrant stems from an ongoing investigation into images and videos recovered from a computer in October of last year. Evidence indicates the suspect was in possession of the material on more than one computer when a search warrant was served at his home on the 3000 block of Anemone. At this time detectives have no reason to believe any of the minors depicted in the material are local. That investigative information was forwarded to the Ada County Prosecuting Attorney's Office and resulted in the felony warrant.

----------

Warrant Arrested: Joy L. Cassidy, 74, Boise

  Warrant Charges:Vandalism (F)

The suspect was taken into custody on an outstanding felony warrant for Vandalism yesterday.

The arrest warrant stems from an ongoing investigation into destructive liquids poured into an Ada County Libraries drop box on multiple occasions starting in April of last year. Evidence indicates the suspect poured liquids like corn syrup, corn oil and ketchup into an outside drop-box destroying books and other items inside the boxes. Damages are estimated to be in excess of $1500.00 That investigative information was forwarded to the Ada County Prosecuting Attorney's Office and resulted in the felony warrant.
