11-16-09 After Crash, Chase, Suspect in Stolen Vehicle in Custody

Boise, Nov. 17, 2009 - 12:15 a.m. - Boise Police have arrested a man found driving a stolen vehicle last night in Garden City.

The suspect tried to evade police, crashed into a police vehicle and a another car at Fairview & Cole, then led police on a short foot chase before being caught and taken into custody.

    Confirmed Charges:

WHAT HAPPENED: Officers Spot Stolen Vehicle: A Boise Police Officer, as part of an ongoing investigation with the Metro Violent Crimes Task Force, spotted a vehicle with fictitious license plates in Garden City at approx 8:25 p.m. this evening. The officer was in an unmarked police vehicle and called for marked units to assist in stopping the suspect vehicle, a Kia Sophia, as it traveled south on Orchard into Boise.

Suspect tries to Elude Police: As the suspect vehicle turned west onto Fairview, a marked Garden City patrol car pulled up behind the suspect vehicle. The officer in the unmarked police vehicle positioned himself in front of the suspect vehicle. As the Garden City officer turned on his overhead lights indicating he wanted the suspect vehicle to pull over, the suspect began weaving in the traffic lane, a move officers interpreted as an attempt to get away. At that time, the officer in the unmarked vehicle ahead of the suspect turned on his rear red and blue lights.

Suspect Rams Police Vehicle, Crashes into Another Car: The suspect then drove onto the curb to the right, raced past the unmarked police vehicle, and swerved back off the curb ramming the right side of the unmarked police car. The suspect vehicle accelerated a short distance but as the suspect tried to jump the concrete divider, the vehicle was thrown back into the southbound turn lane. The suspect vehicle hit another vehicle stopped on westbound Fairview waiting to turn south onto Cole Rd. That car hit another car also in the turn lane. Fortunately, no one in any of the vehicles was hurt.

Suspect Runs from Officers: The suspect then ran from the car. Both the Garden City and Boise Police officers chased him. He was caught and taken into custody in a parking lot on the northeast corner of the intersection.

Traffic Impact: After the incident as officers investigated, traffic was restricted for approx 30 minutes Fairview Ave just east of Cole. Traffic in the area was reported to be very light.
