Amber Alert Canceled - Luca Found Safe

Boise, Sept. 1, 2009 - Boise Police have canceled an Amber Alert for Luca Principali. Luca, age 7, has been located and safely returned to his father.

Arrested: Ekaterina Principali, 38, Scottsdale, Arizona

    Charge: 2nd degree Kidnapping

What Happened: As part of the ongoing investigation, the suspect, the child's biological mother, Ekaterina Principali was located by officers. At the urging of officers, she voluntarily turned herself into Boise Police this afternoon. Where the suspect and child have been since he was taken from his east Boise home August 19th remain under investigation and details are not available for public release at this time.

Luca was with the suspect when she turned herself into police. He appears unharmed and in good physical condition. Luca has been reunited with his father.

The man who reportedly went to the door of Luca's family's East Boise apartment and physically abducted Luca is not in police custody. That aspect of the case remains under investigation. Officers do believe the man was working in cooperation with the suspect.

"We're extremely happy to have found Luca and found him OK," said Captain Gary Compton of the Boise Police Criminal Investigation Division. "Finding Luca safe has been a priority for our officers since the little boy disappeared almost two weeks ago."

"We know many people have been watching for Luca and have joined us in hoping for his safe return. We want to thank the community and the many law enforcement agencies, from Idaho and around the country, for their support in this important case." said Capt. Compton.

    Statement from Luca's father:

Tony Principali, Luca's father has asked the Boise Police Department to pass onto the entire community how much he and the rest of Luca’s family appreciate people’s thoughts, prayers, and support during what has been a very difficult time.

The family appreciates some private time as they welcome Luca home.

UPDATE: Arrest Warrant Issued in Amber Alert case!

Luca Principali was abducted from his east Boise home approx. 3:45 p.m. Wed., August 19th, 2009 by an unknown male who officers believe is working in cooperation with the boys biological mother.

According to a witness the male suspect took the boy after knocking on the door and mentioning the non-custodial mothers name.

A 2nd Degree Kidnapping warrant has been issued for the non-custodial parent, Ekaterina Principali, 38 years old of Scottsdale, Arizona. She is a white female, 5’6”, 120 lbs, with brown hair.

Police have reason to believe that Luca may be traveling in a silver colored minivan with California license plate 6GQC981

Luca is 7 years old, 4' tall, 60 lbs, he has brown shoulder length hair in a bowl cut, and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black Star Wars t-shirt with an image of Darth Vader on the front, camo print knee length shorts, and was barefoot.

Witnesses describe the suspect as a light complected adult male, approx age 45, 5' 11", 190 lbs, light brown hair cut short and thinning on top, with a full beard. The suspect was wearing a red, white, purple & green horizontal stripe shirt and blue jeans.

Boise Police Detectives are working with regional and national Law Enforcement agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to locate 7 year old Luca, and return him safely to his home in Boise.

Police are urging anyone who knows where Luca may be, to contact police immediately at 343-COPS.

“This, and other recent cases, highlight a very important fact. Although we may feel that the greatest danger to our children comes from strangers, it is far more likely that someone we know, and may even be related, to is involved in incidents of this kind.” Says Boise Police Cpt. Gary Compton “Getting to know your neighbors and speaking with your kids about what to do in an emergency is always a good idea.”
