032009 UPDATE: IN CUSTODY; Officers Search for Suspect who fled Traffic Stop; Suspect may be Armed

Boise, March 20, 2009 - Boise Police took a wanted fugitive into custody this afternoon after a short stand off in Boise's North End.

"Considering that the suspect has shown a willingness to risk the safety of citizens and police officers, we're very happy to have taken him ito custody peacefully," said Lt. Kent Lipple, Boise Police Patrol Watch Commander.

Arrested: Shane A. Nichelson, 26, Boise

Charges: Eluding an Officer (F), Aggravated Assault on an Officer (F), and Leaving the Scene of an Accident (m), Driving without Privileges (m), Possession of drug Paraphernalia (m) Parole Violation - Boise Police have been advised by Probation and Parole Agents that Nichelson is a parole absconder.

What Happened: Officers with Boise Police, The Metro Violent Crimes Task Force, the Ada County Metro Narcotics Unit, and the Boise PD Organized Retail Crime unit have been searching for the suspect, Nichelson, since he ran from police after a pursuit late yesterday. Boise Police were also searching for Nichelson in connection with an ongoing drug investigation.

This morning, officers learned the suspect may be at a home on the 1700 blk of N. 31st Street. Officers began surveillance on the home and soon confirmed the suspect was the only occupant inside.

Because the suspect is known to potentially be armed, officers made contact with adjacent neighbors and asked those who were home to voluntarily leave the area until the situation was resolved. Meanwhile, Boise Police patrol officers secured the neighborhood, blocking traffic in the area between 30th and 32nd, Bella and Irene Streets. The Boise Police SOU (SWAT) team was also called out as a precaution and assisted in securing the area immediately around the house.

Approx. 1:00 p.m. officers tried to make contact with a loud speaker from a Boise Police patrol car. Nicholsen did not respond. After more than an hour, the suspect called police dispatch, indicated he was willing to surrender. Officers at the scene then took him into custody peacefully.
