Boise, March 14, 2009, 7:22 a.m. - Boise Police are investigating a homicide that happened early this morning outside a bar and billiards hall on Overland Rd. Police have one man in custody. The victim is a Boise man in his late 20's.

Arrested: Jeremy J. Hobbs, 27, Boise

    Charged: 2nd degree Murder

What Happened: Boise Police were called to a report of shots fired outside Backstreet Billiards, 10531 W. Overland Rd. at 2:06 a.m. this morning. Boise Police patrol officers were in the area and got to the scene within one minute of the call. As officers arrived, they saw one man down in the parking lot. Witnesses pointed out the suspect who was still armed. Boise police patrol officers were able to take him into custody peacefully.

After interviewing numerous witnesses, detectives say it appears a verbal argument involving the suspect and a another man began inside the bar. The two men carried the argument outside. Witnesses tell officers the victim, an acquaintance of those involved including the suspect, stepped in to try and calm the situation down. Instead a shoving match began began the suspect and victim. Witnesses say the suspect then pulled out a small revolver and fired, hitting the victim several times. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are still investigating the exact number of shots fired.

"This is a very unfortunate situation for everyone involved. The victim is a young family man," said Sgt. Mark Barnett of the Boise Police Violent Crime Unit.

"Witnesses tell us the victim had just called his wife to come give him a ride home, and that he apparently was trying to calm everybody down when he was shot," said Barnett.

Detectives say the victim's wife did arrive on scene shortly after the shooting. She was met by Boise Police patrol officers who were securing the perimeter of the scene. A Boise Police victim-witness advocate and detectives later informed her of what happened.

Victim: The victim's name will be released by the Ada County Coroner after further notification of family.

Investigation Continues: Boise Police are asking anyone who may have information, perhaps witnessed the argument or shooting, but has not been interviewed by detectives to please call Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.
