02-04-09 Arrest in Arson, Insurance Fraud
Boise, Feb. 4, 2009 - Boise Police have filed charges against a man accused of setting fire to his business.
Suspect: Douglas A. Wold, 36, Boise
Charges: Arson, 1st Degree (F), Insurance Fraud (F)
Background: Boise Firefighters were called to a structure fire on the 3500 blk of Hill Rd. at approx 8:39 p.m., December 13, 2007. Motorists called 9-1-1 to report the burning structure. Witnesses also reported seeing a man whose clothing appeared to be on fire, run from the building, get in a car and drive away.
The structure was a small, single story office with a basement that housed a property appraisal business. The building was a total loss.
Later that same evening, Boise Police detectives learned a man had driven himself to St. Alphonsus Hospital with serious burns. The man was flown to the Salt Lake City burn unit with 2nd and 3rd degree burns to much of his upper body.
The Investigation: After what detectives describe as a "very methodical, complex" investigation, officers believe they have evidence to show that the fire at the business on Hill Rd. Dec. 13, 2007 was deliberately set in an attempt to gain insurance money.
After piecing together evidence, Detectives believe the suspect spread a flammable liquid throughout the building when it ignited. Detectives believe the suspect, burning and injured from the fire, then ran outside to his car and left. The suspects two young children were in the car at the time. The children were not hurt. Detectives believe the suspect drove to his home nearby, then drove himself to the hospital.
A warrant was issued for Wold's arrest Monday. Boise Police had been in contact with Wold. He turned himself into the Ada County jail early this morning.
