10-19-08 Grenade Found - Safely Removed

Boise, Oct. 19, 2998 - 9:30 p.m. - Boise Police are clearing the scene after a World War Two type grenade was found in the backyard of a home near Kootenai and Orchard.

The resident of the home, on the 1200 blk of Security Lane, called police approx. 6:50 p.m. this evening after finding what he thought looked like a grenade.

Members of the Boise Police Bomb Squad responded. For safety, bomb technicians treated the explosive as if it were live and dangerous. Officers evacuated about 20 homes directly surrounding the backyard as a safety precaution. The bomb robot then retrieved the grenade and placed it in a secure vehicle where it was removed from the city. The grenade will be taken to an undisclosed location for disposal.

At approx 9:35 p.m., residents began returning to their homes. A BPD Airport K9 trained in explosives detection searched the backyard following the removal of the grenade, but nothing of concern was found.

At this time, officers are not sure how the grenade got in the homes backyard. That investigation will continue. The officers immediate concerns was to remove the grenade from the area safely.
