08-11-08 Arrest for DUI/Leaving the Scene/Fugitive to Idaho
Boise, August 11, 2008 - Boise Police arrested a man for drunk driving after he allegedly ran from an accident, was followed by witnesses and found by officers, and later identified to be a fugitive from California.
"Alert witnesses were very helpful in keeping an eye on this suspect as he apparently drove drunk, then tried to run after causing an accident", said Lt. Doug Doney, Boise Police Watch Commander at the time of the accident. "We never want citizens to put themselves in danger, but these citizens were able to give officers good information so the officers could do their job and track him down."
Arrested: Jacob O. Cunningham, 25, recent Boise address
Charges: DUI (m), Reckless driving (m), Leaving the Scene of an Accident (m), Fugitive to Idaho.
What Happened: Boise Police Officers were called to a traffic accident at Vista and Capitol at approx. 6:58 p.m. Sunday, August 10th. When officers arrived, they found witnesses had ran after the man who they say had driven recklessly and caused the accident. One witness called into police dispatch to give officers the approximate location of the suspect. Officers searched the area and soon found the suspect walking down a nearby street.
Witnesses told officers the suspect, was driving at an excessive speed southbound on Capitol at Vista when he drifted across the center barrier and hit the tail end of a northbound SUV. The driver then immediately ran off on foot. The intersection was fairly busy at the time and the accident was witnessed by several people.
Investigating officers found Cunningham to be DUI, with a blood alcohol level (BAC) of approx. .16. After identifying Cunningham, officers also found he is apparently a fugitive from California where he is wanted on a parole violation for drug offenses.
Boise Police booked the suspect into the Ada County Jail on the above charges.
