07-28-08 UPDATE: Arrest, Suspect in Custody; Bank Robbery at Eagle & McMillan
Boise, July 29, 2008 - Boise Police, with immediate cooperation of the Idaho Department of Correction and the FBI, have identified a suspect in the two Boise bank robberies yesterday. At 10:00 a.m. this morning, Boise Police learned the suspect is in the custody of police in Baker City, Oregon.
Boise Police detectives have obtained an arrest warrant for:
Suspect: Kenneth Mitchell Casey, 47
Charge: 2 cts. of Robbery
The Investigation: As Boise Police were investigating the second of two bank robberies in the city Monday, investigators were contacted by by the Idaho Department of Correction with a lead that an inmate who had just walked away from a Community Work Center matched the robbery suspect's description. After further investigation, detectives were able to link the escapee, Casey, to the two robberies.
Early Tuesday morning, approx 5:00 a.m., Boise Police were contacted by police in Baker City, Oregon. Baker City Police reported they had attempted a traffic stop and the driver failed to yield to officers. According to Baker City Police, after a short pursuit, the driver ran from the car and escaped on foot. Inside the vehicle, a mustang, Baker City Police found evidence that appeared to be connected to the Boise bank robberies.
This morning, as Boise Police detectives were in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant for Casey, they were again contacted by police in Baker City with news that Casey had been taken into custody. Information given to Boise Police is the suspect spotted by an off-duty police dispatcher in a parking lot near the city center. When spotted, Casey again apparently attempted to elude police by entering the Powder River. However, Casey was taken into custody by Baker City officers.
Currently, Casey is being held in Baker City on Oregon charges of Reckless Driving and Eluding Police. He has also been charged in Idaho with two counts of robbery following yesterday's bank robberies. Please check with the courts for appearance dates.
More on Suspect: According to the Idaho Department of Correction Public Information Officer Jeff Ray, Casey walked away from the South Idaho Correctional Institution Community Work Center. He was an inmate driver and was discovered missing at 3:32 p.m. Monday when he failed to return to the work center for his next scheduled run.
According to IDOC, Casey was serving a 10-year to 20-year sentence for robbery out of Canyon County.

Second Robbery, Same Day, looks like Same Suspect
Boise, July 28, 2008 - Boise Police are investigating a second bank robbery today, and detectives say the suspect appears to be the same in each.
The second bank robbed is the Wells Fargo at Eagle & McMillan. It was robbed at approx 4:33 p.m. Witnesses describe the suspect as 5'10" - 6" , 180 lbs short dark hair wearing a ball cap, light colored shirt and blue jeans, appears to be in his mid-40's,
As in the robbery of the Washington Federal at 2:41 this afternoon, the suspect walked up to the teller with a note demanding cash, and left the bank with an undisclosed amount.
After the Wells Fargo robbery, two witnesses in the parking lot tell officers they saw a man matching the suspect description get into a silver or light grey pick up head south on Eagle Rd.
Detectives, working with the FBI are following leads. If anyone has any information, or may have seen someone matching the suspect description, they're urged to call Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.
