10-14-07 Arrest in Shooting of Students
Boise, Oct. 16, 2007 - Boise Police have made an arrest in the shooting of 3 students early the morning of Sept. 3. The arrest this afternoon was the result of an intensive 6 week investigation that involved dozens of tips from the community and many, many hours of investigation by officers.

Arrested: Juan Manuel Rios, 24, Boise
Charged: 3 cts Aggravated Battery, 2 cts of Robbery, Using a Firearm during the commission of a felony (f), Felon in possession of a firearm (f).

"This arrest is thanks to good information from the community and a lot of hard work from our officers who have made this case a priority since it happened," said Capt. Gary Compton of the Boise Police Criminal Investigative Division. "This was a very violent crime that is rare in our community, and time combined with great detective work has paid off. We hope the victims and their families sleep a little sounder tonight knowing this suspect in behind bars."

What Happened/Background: Early the morning of Sept. 3rd, three young men were shot as they stood outside of a home on the 1200 blk of Security Lane. The suspect reportedly was a stranger to the victims, had been walking down the street and stopped to talk to the young men, walked away, then returned a short time later. When the suspect walked back toward the home he shot the three victims and left with two wallets belonging to the victims

The Victims: All three victims were students at the Northwest Lineman's College in Meridian who had recently moved to Boise to begin classes at the time of the shooting. All three victims were all hospitalized after the attack, two of the young men suffered very serious injuries. One young man remains hospitalized.

The Reward: On Sept. 6, the college announced it's employees had gathered together to offer a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the shooter. A $1,000 reward was also offered by Crime Stoppers. With community assistance, the reward quickly grew to $15,000.

The Investigation: Since the suspect composite was released to the community on Sept. 6, Boise Police have received more than 60 tips with possible leads on this crime. Each tip was thoroughly investigated.
A series of leads began coming together approx. 4 weeks ago that, combined with physical evidence found by officers at the scene led to today's arrest.

Today's Arrest: Boise Police secured an arrest warrant for Rios earlier today for the charges listed above. Boise Police saw Rios leave a business on the southeast corner of Fairview and Cole approx. 5:00 this afternoon. Officers contacted Rios in the parking lot and took him into custody peacefully. Rios has been booked into the Ada County Jail on $2 million bond.

Motive: Detectives believe at this time the likely motive for this violent crime was robbery. Despite today's arrest, this crime remains under investigation.
