UPDATE: Search for Rape Suspect Continues; Charges Dismissed Against Former Suspect

Boise, July 11, 2007 - Ada County Prosecutors, working with Boise Police, after obtaining new evidence have dropped the charges against a man arrested for raping a teenage girl early on the morning of June 22nd.

Officers continue in earnest their search for the suspect in the case, who remains at large.

Charges Dropped Against: Timothy Daniel Haman, 21, Boise. Haman was charged with rape & burglary.

"Evidence at the time of his arrest pointed toward Mr. Haman," said Capt. Gary Compton of the Boise Police Criminal Investigation Division. "We now have more information and Mr. Haman is no longer a suspect. We sincerely regret the pain this difficult situation has caused Mr. Haman and his family."

"We also still have a young woman who is the victim of a horrible crime and we will continue with all our best efforts to find the person responsible," said Capt. Compton.

Detectives have continued to follow leads in this case since it was reported. That investigation continues.

Suspect Description: white male, 5' 11" - 6' tall, thin build, scruffy short beard or facial hair, in his 20's, at the time of the attack suspect was wearing only long, baggy dark-colored basketball shorts with a white stripe.

Anyone with information on a possible suspect is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.

What Happened: The victim, a 16 year old girl reported to police at approx. 4:34 a.m. June 22nd that she had been raped in her bed by a man she did not know. She reported the crime quickly and was able to provide police with a physical description of the man. Officers immediately began an area search for the suspect in the neighborhood west of Maple Grove near Edna. Very quickly, within approx 25 minutes, officers found a man, Haman walking down a street near where the attack occurred. Haman was a near perfect match of the suspect description. Detectives say other evidence also pointed to Haman at the time of his arrest.

Haman was arraigned in 4th District Court on the rape & burglary charges Monday, June 25th when a judge found there was probable cause to hold Mr. Haman on the charges.

To expedite examination of the evidence, Boise Police Detectives submitted a DNA sample to a private lab outside Idaho who could insure prompt results. Those evidence tests were received by Boise Police and Ada County Prosecutors this afternoon and the DNA samples do not match. Charges have been dismissed against Timothy D. Haman. Detectives say Haman is no longer a suspect.

Boise Police Detectives say they have not received any reports of similar crimes anywhere else in the city. The suspect's description also, at this time, does not match that of any outstanding suspect. At this time, detectives say, this crime appears to be an isolated incident and the investigation continues.

Again, anyone with information on a possible suspect is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.
