UPDATE: Officer Involved Shooting
Boise, April 3, 2007 - The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force continues to investigate the officer involved shooting that occurred overnight on the 3500 blk of Federal Way, just inside the west entrance of the Fred Meyer store at approx. 11:00p.m. Monday night.
The investigation today has revealed some additional facts about what happened.
Background - Prior to Officer Arrival:
As officers were called to a forgery in progress, they were informed that the suspect was likely a man already wanted for forgery in Ada County. The man had been tentatively identified by store clerks who were notified March 26th by the Boise Police Crime Prevention Unit that the suspect had been passing bad checks in the Boise area since late February.
Police had alerted stores to be on the watch for the suspect. Boise Police detectives had been actively looking for the suspect since the warrant was issued for his arrest March 26th.
When the Officer Met the Suspect:
As the suspect was walking out of the store, one officer was walking in. He verbally placed the suspect under arrest. The suspect violently resisted. A second officer was quickly on scene and both tried to take the suspect into custody, at one point, the two officers struggled with the suspect on the ground.
The suspect was able to break free. He pulled a knife. That’s when both officers pulled their weapons and fired.
Further interviews with witnesses today revealed that indeed some customers remained in the store at the time of the incident along with several employees.
CITF Investigators have interviewed approx. 13 witnesses who were inside the store at the time of the incident.
The two officers fired three shots. All three hit the suspect.
A review of officers audio tapes show the entire incident took some 35 seconds from start to finish.
Identification of the suspect will come from the Ada County Coroner after notification of next of kin. However, Boise Police can confirm the suspect is not believed to be from the Boise or Ada County area.
Additional Persons of Interest:
Boise Police Detectives investigating the bad checks are looking for two other persons of interest. Neither is a suspect in the cases at this time.
- James D. Anderson, 46, believed to be from the Twin Falls area, driving a silver ’98 Ford Econoline van with Twin Falls plates.
- Avis M. Star, 41, driving a white ’87 Mercury Topaz with Twin Falls license plates.
Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Anderson or Star is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.
At this time, the two officers involved in the shooting have yet to be interviewed by CITF investigators. The officers were allowed to go home, get some rest, and will be interviewed tonight about what they saw, heard and felt during this incident. The officers names are not being released at this time.
One officer is a seven year veteran on patrol, the other has been with BPD for more than two years.
Garden City is leading the CITF investigation. When the investigation is complete, the report will be turned over to the Ada County Prosecutors Office for review.
