Vandals Damage Memorial Flags
Boise, Nov. 5, 2006 - Boise Police cited one man and arrested a second this morning after witnesses said they saw the pair vandalize two American flags on the grounds of the Idaho Statehouse. The flags are memorials to soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq. The vandalism was called in and witnessed by officers with Capitol Mall Security.
Arrested: Michael Burkett, 24, Boise
Charged: Malicious Injury to Property, Resisting and Obstructing Officers (both misdemeanors).

Charged: Malicious Injury to Property (misdemeanor)
Background: Officers were called to the Capitol mall at 2:23 a.m. this morning. When they arrived, they found mall security officers detaining two suspects. Offices also found two flagpoles damaged, one pole was bent so the flag was laying on the ground, the other flagpole had been bent and pulled out of the ground. Each flag was dedicated to the memory of a specific soldier killed in Iraq. Damage to each flag is estimated at approx. $200.
Officers say one suspect, Michael, tried to physically interfere with their investigation and again physically resisted as officers took him into custody. Michael was arrested on the charges and booked into the Ada County Jail. Thomas was cited and released at the scene.
