DUI Patrols thru Labor Day
Boise, August 28th, 2006 - Boise Police will use a $5,100 grant to fund extra DUI patrols through the busy Labor Day holiday weekend. The grant money, from the Idaho Transportation Department, will pay for officer overtime on the BPD Night STEP team, the special DUI unit that's responsible for more than 70% of Boise's DUI arrests.
The Labor Day DUI patrols will add to Boise PD's already aggressive drunk driving enforcement program.
- Last year, Boise Police arrested more than 1,700 drunk drivers.
- BPD has arrested more than 3,500 drunk driver in the past three years.
- Three BPD Night STEP officers arrested more than 300 drunk driver each last year.
- DUI related accidents in Boise were down 20% in 2004 (NHTSA stats, most recent available).
Today, Boise Police were joined by representatives of Idaho State Police, Meridian Police, Nampa Police and the Canyon County Sheriff's Office in announcing the extra patrols. ITD has given $91,000 in grants to 27 law enforcement agencies throughout Idaho to support the extra DUI patrols. Even agencies who did not receive the grants have agreed to step up DUI patrols throughout the busy Labor Day holiday weekend.
