Car Theft Suspect Arrested
Boise, March 28, 2006 - Boise Police have a man in custody on robbery charges after a reported car-jacking at noon today at the Edwards movie/restaurant complex on Overland.
Arrested: Michael Kenneth Cheser, 27, North Bend, Oregon
The Crime: Witnesses tell officers a man with a bat walked up to another man carrying several keys on his belt and demanded his car. The victim said he did not have a car, and the suspect walked off.
The suspect then approached two women getting out of a car, threatened them with the bat and demanded their vehicle. The driver gave the man the keys. Both women did have their purses and one was able to get a computer out of the car before the suspect drove off. Both women are visiting Boise for business, one from LA and one from Miami. The vehicle was a rental car described as a silver Pontiac Grand Am with Washington license plates.
The Suspect: The victims described the suspect as thin, with very bad teeth, a tattoo on his neck, wearing all black with a black baseball cap. Despite an immediate search of the area, officers did not find the suspect.
Reckless Vehicle: At 1:40 p.m. a citizen called to report a reckless driver traveling about 100 mph eastbound on I-84 near Eisenman Road. Officers were sent to the area, but could not pursue the vehicle because of speed and distance.
In Custody: At 3:22 p.m. emergency dispatch received a call for medical assistance to the Stage Stop, east of Boise. An Ada County Sheriff's deputy arrived and found a man matching the suspect description. The stolen car was also found nearby.
Ada County EMS transported the suspect to a Boise hospital where he is being evaluated for complaints of non-police related injuries.
The suspect, Cheser, remains in custody of Boise Police and will be transported to the Ada County Jail on robbery charges when he is medically cleared.
Background Stats: Car jacking-type accidents are extremely rare in the Boise area. According to Boise Police statistics, since 2003, two car-jacking thefts were reported, one was attempted.
